I was fortunate recently to visit Snowdonia National Park, where one man, one partner, two kids and the dog camped for four days. Apart from the having the satisfaction of climbing the UK's second highest mountain (we are doing Ben Nevis later this year) I was struck by the phenomenon of countryside manners. I would bet a pound to a penny that 99% of the people on our campsite where town and city dwellers. I would also wager that they went through the same transformation that I did. Once esconced amongst the green hills, babbling brooks and cultured aromas of the rural idyll, your average "towny" suddenly beomes chatty, friendly and socially outgoing. They start saying "hi" and "hello" to complete strangers. What's more, they do it wth a smile on their face.
